Retailers Expect Lumps of Coal (And other Yuletide business section headline clichés)
The National Retail Federation committed to some numbers today (Oct. 6) with the release of its holiday sales forecast. Ylan Mui, as usual, has the smooth breakdown. Basically, the best case scenario for Christmas shopping is a 1 percent decline in 2009 from 2008 — which is good news only because 2008 showed a 3.4…

The door buzzer rang this morning, about 20 minutes ago. UPS. Package from … Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. I was opening it and suddenly realized what moment this was about to be. My book. I took it upstairs and showed Michael the envelope. “Is that it?” “I think so.” I took it out. I held it.…

Stand back, I’m gonna explode with praise. But first, a plug: If you live in Washington, go see David Finkel read from The Good Soliders tomorrow night (Monday, Oct. 5) at Politics & Prose. Now for the praise explosion, really just a mash note: If you’ve ever been a feature writer at a newspaper in…

Yesterday my editor at Houghton sent me Kirkus Reviews‘ take on Tinsel from the Oct. 1 issue. Remember when I promised I would post the bad reviews along with the good? Well, here’s a bad one — not horribly awful, but far from glowing. First of all, you might ask: What is Kirkus Reviews? It’s…

I went looking for it this morning and couldn’t find a word about it. A business reporter I know told me she…

Michael and I have seen a few movies lately. I thought District 9 was intriguing enough and mostly original — though I wonder if the novelty of structuring movies around “found video” and “news reports” is wearing thin, or if it’s just so commonly accepted now as a narrative device that I need to get…

Between work and Tinsel pre-pub jitters and promo stuff, I keep forgetting to develop the part of my brain that can think of anything remotely worthwhile to type here and send off into the ether. So, until I get things rolling again, how about some book reports? I have three quickies… Finished reading Lorrie Moore’s…

I guess it happens to everyone — the best of blogging intentions go astray. What’s happening now is that I’m in the full brunt of writing about the fall TV season, and there’s a lot of Tinsel pre-pub stuff going on (good stuff). Please stand by. All two of you. (Three?) I’ll play catch-up this…

We are just a typo-fix away from a completely finished Tinsel book jacket. I think the designer, Michaela Sullivan, did a fantastic job of finding the right mix between the glitzy gaudiness and the moody blue serenity of Christmas. Also, they want to use a metallic-finish paper for the jacket. It’ll be shiny!
